He had White/White/White to begin the season, I guess he wanted a little colour.

Not sure if you would call this a Sighting, but if you have Satellite Radio, Be sure to tune in to the NHL Center Ice Channel at 4PM EST. Kay Whitmore is going to be on the show talking about the proposed Size Specific Goal Equipment change.

Yeah, Basically Kay is going the be the Only guy measuring Goalies when they implement it, and have a set formula for ATK, and Knee to Proper Spot on Thigh. But mostly talked about how the current system is flawed, and allows for smaller goalies like Legace to have a 38" pad, when he only really needs a 36, or 34. But on the other hand, the new system would allow for those that Need it, to go Beyond the current 38" limit, if deemed necessary. Like when was it Carolina had to dress their Marketing guy in net for Warmups or whatever, they were saying he's a big guy, and uses a 38 or 39 pad, but shaves the boot area down to make it fit the limit. And there was a guy in the ECHL or somewhere who's like 6'8". So if needed he could jump to a 39" or higher, as long as it provides the adequate protection, and is not overkill and just used for blocking area. *Cough Hiller *Cough Cough*

Did he comment on getting goalies into properly sized pants and C/A? I think that is a bigger deal than the pad size.

Incredibly, he seems to have let that one fall off the radar. One of two reasons: honestly, because it was easy to figure out and it doesn't bear discussion (not bloody likely), or, cynically, because restricting pad sizes is 'sexy', something braindead colour-commentators and Bettman can spout off about.

The oft-made arguement to the Legacy example is that if you restrict the size of Manny's pads, you're making his job harder when it's already hard enough already due to his size. Correlating pad size to measurements unfairly rewards huge goalies while unfairly punishing small goalies. Believe me, it's hard enough to use a 38" pad when you're 5'11" or 6'2" - which is why Luongo dropped to a 37" last year - and it's astonishing the Manny plays at about 5'4" and can move that well. It's like a small man in a construction gang swinging the same hammer as the local giant; you don't take it away and give him a child's tool, you commend the effort and skill.

And, in any event, Whitmore is taking the wrong bloody measurements. The height of a thigh-rise has effectively ZERO to do with the length of a thigh - the pad doesn't protect the leg above the knee OR make saves in that position. That's what the pants are for. The sole protective purpose of the thigh-rise is to protect the knees in the butterfly.

The way these measurements are being taken, guys with short thighs will have their knees exposed to almost any low midline shot. Knee-pads help, sure, but they're not meant to take a direct shot at 90mph+.

The sensible thing would have been to universally restrict the maximum height of the thigh to one inch more than the length of the knee-block (6") for a standard 7" thigh. Why?-- because that would mean that a goalie who used pads with a flexible upper break could protect his knees, but wouldn't gain any additional blocking space with his knees spread apart.

That, however, wouldn't have guaranteed Kay Whitmore a long-term well-paying job flying around North America and hanging out with his friends.
