Mission Fuel 110 or 85 Shoulders

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Anyone use the Mission Fuel 85 or 110 shoulders? I'm looking for something thats low-profile in the shoulder caps and lots of range-of-motion in the chest.

Mike

I use the 85's I like them because they are low-profile and I feel like I get good range of motion. They are very comfortable especially for a big guy like me and offer excellent protection.

Well I picked up a pair of 85's (actually the Fuel 900, a SFS SMU), and here are my initial impressions:

- They fit very large. I'm 6'3" 210lbs and I needed a medium to get a reasonably snug fit. Even then, the medium fits much looser than my old Easton Ultra Lite XLs.

- The mobility in the chest is great. It has far more padding than my old pads yet I can't notice any drop off in range-of-motion. I like the cut of the Fuels (similiar to Nike or Easton Stealth) in that it doesn't have a wide piece across the chest and stomache that can be restricting. The design of the bicep protection also allows for a lot of movement in the arms and shoulder.

- I wanted low-profile, and these are a little larger than I wanted, but they don't approach the size of most other companies. I wanted something more on the order of CCM Vectors, but my LHS didn't have them. I know most swear by Jofa/RBK, but I just can't stand the large caps, and CCM Tacks and most Bauers are even worse.

- The plastic inserts in the chest and back are thin compared to my ULs, but I imagine in the 110s they are more substantial. The plastic "skeleton" in the arm protection is much better than my ULs, and the foam padding itself is sterner than in my old pads, so that makes up for it.

- The bicep coverage on the CCM Vector elbows seem to interfere with the bicep protection on the shoulders. I may remove them to allow a little more freedom.

I'll write a full review after I use them for a while. I thought I should throw something down since it seems like very few people have had experience with them.

I used to wear the Fuel 85's and found them too bulky for me. I prefer a lower profile so I went with some small old Jofa's. Not at much protection, but work plenty well.

UPDATE:

After trying these on under my jersey and wearing them around the apartment for 15mins I've decided they aren't for me. They're too bulky in the shoulders, and the bicep protection slides around too much. For some reason they are also very uncomfortable over my shoulders; this may because they are medium, but I was swimming in the Large, so a no-win situation there.

This means I'm back in the market for pads. I need low-profile shoulders and lots of chest mobility. Chadd seems to speak highly of the Itech 660, does anyone have any opinions? Or can anyone recommend anything else?
