Looking for a boot to fit a boney heel

Recommended Posts

So a couple months ago I needed some new skates cause mine broke and was in a bit of a rush, grabbed some XXV and thought they were awesome, my right heel hurt a bit but figured they would break in. Well here I am after several games and my right heel is still killing, there just isn't enough room. I just tried to rebake and slammed it back as hard as i could and pushed into it while the skate cooled (ouch). I started going through other brands' boots, the supremes are the same, not enough heel room, the best I tried on were Eastons, they felt like they had way more heel room, I have yet to try on a CCM vector. Does anyone else have this issue?

9k and U+ are great suggestions. Nike flexlite/4.0 series as well

Yes the Flexlites are good in the heel but they have A LOT of volume in the heel. The best thing to do is try on skates.

CCM U+ Pro and the Reebok 9k (same as everybody elses suggestions). The 9k has the air bladder from the pump on it so it will cushion your heel as well as provide a continuosly changing heel form. The U+ is a good option because the boot has a decently wide heal to begin with and the foam they use is extremely moldable. If you have a LHS that sent somebody to CCM's U+ fitting school they should be able to give you all the info on what to do and what boot should work well for you.

Thanks for the input guys, to clarify, heal width is not the problem, it is the depth, I have this crazy bone that sticks out the back of my heal. I will try on some Vector U's and some RBK's as soon as I can. Flexlites seem real expensive still wherever I look.

if you have a crazy bone spur or whatever im not sure any skate will fit comfy out of the ox. most heels dont have that much padding. ask you lhs to get whatever spot thats hurting you punched out. hopefully that will help

overkill, but taking a break at work :P

heel.jpgheelLines.jpg

dunno if the pics do it justice, looks weirder irl, but its a bone, not so much a spur, I made the second with the lines to show my heel size compared to roughly the depth of my boot. The low end easton I had a chance to try on fit much better, still looking for a chance to try on vector and RBK. I will also look into getting it punched out, cost, who can do it, etc.

update, So I now have tried on a wide version of U+, better heel but the instep is to narrow and kills. RBK wide version is just overall to narrow. I couldnt find a wide version of an easton synergy, but I tried on a standard width and it felt pretty decent, wide would be better. But I think I would rather try punching the heel out on my Vapors, other than the heel, the vapor feels the best to me, is it even possible to punch the vapor material like old leather skates?

Haha check this out, it has a name http://www.myfootshop.com/xq/ASP/Method.Co...archresults.htm

You should see someone about a bone spur like that. No boot is really made to fit something like that. Getting it removed may be a lot easier then getting a skate to fit it.

My right heel looks strikingly similar. I'm wearing a pair of Vapor XX 10EE... I'd think a qualified hockey shop could punch your skate for you. I'll be shopping for a new pair soon... I also use SuperFeet.

Hmmm, hope surgery isn't the answer, sounds spendy :)

talked to the guy at the lhs and as soon as I mentioned I wanted my vapor heel punched he knew I had "bauer bumps" (I've seen the bump called this elsewhere). He mentioned it could be from my vapor being a little big, but that doesn't make sense because altho I could stand to go down a 1/2 size, this problem was immediate in the new skates. My pair of supremes fit like a glove, but perhaps the bump formed after using such a floppy old skate for so long. I am going there tomorrow to look at my options, he mentioned punching this area of a vapor is difficult. I am thinking my options are punch what I have, step down from 11.5EE to 11EE and punch that, or find an easton to skate on to take the pressure off for a while.... or of course .. ugh.. surgery :P

Your Vapors are probably the cause of your problem. They don't call it Bauer bumps for no reason. The vapors heels were probably too loose which allowed your heel to slide up and down (no heel lock) which created the spurs. I would find a skate with a narrow heel "Supremes" and have them punched for the spurs.

Good Luck

I have the same problem. I've been on Vapors since Vapor 8's and I'm currently looking for a new skate. I spoke with someone at my LHS today and they said it's most likely the skates. I didn't try anything on since I'm going to try to have them punched tomorrow, but he did recommend Grafs, Eastons, and Reeboks, specifically the ones with the pump. I'm also going to eventually try on Flexlites.

Funny you started this thread, because my heels were starting to hurt really bad, even with regular sneakers. I was actually going to create a post like this lolol.

Made a move today, like I said, the problem existed before I got the vapors, the old supremes must have caused the bump, because the first time I skated the Vapor I noticed it and shrugged it off as "it will break in".

Anyway, I switched to RBK 5K pumps after a long time at the LHS trying all sorts of different skates. If it weren't for the spot being sore from my vapors I think these would completely fix it, the pain is barely noticeable compared to the "OMG OW" in the vapors. I am confident this will be the solution, update coming after my game tonight.

Excellent, I'm going to have to try a pair on pretty soon.

Will these Bauer bumps ever go away? Or will I be left with a reminder of poorly fitting skates for the rest of my life.

I developed a similar problem after I switched to the Vapors. I went back to wearing my Missions until the pain went away.

The fix was to stop lacing the top eyelets. My shin pushing against the laces was pushing my heel back hard against the back of the boot. Leaving the top unlaced allowed more forward flex & less pressure on the heel.

Thought I would piggy-back on this thread rather than starting a new one.

I have been in supreme 70's (2 different pairs) for about 18 months, and have developed Bauer Bumps. They do not cause me pain, But I would like to keep that from ever happening or really getting any worse at all. The skates seem to fit my foot well now, but in my previous pair and when I first got the current pair, my heel could move a little but even after baking. If Bauer's fit my foot best, should I stick with them? or would it be best to look at other brands?

BTW, the Vapors don't fit me at all, and I'm not a fan of the pumps or Grafs. Never tried the flexlite though, and have heard good things about it.

CCM Vectors seem to have a heel that doesn't effect the bumps as much if you can handle the crazy narrow instep. I was also told that this years X: series of vapors fixed the heel issue, altho they still killed when I tried them. Played a few games on the RBK now, most comfortable boot I've ever used so far.
