Several Years Out of the Net

Hello gentlemen, well... I've been out of the net for about 7 years and am looking to get back in. I'm sure a lot of things have changed since then, maybe... maybe not. I was wondering if anyone has seen the "vintage leather" pads around, the ones Price used for the Habs. Looking to just invest in some new pads and dump off my old Bauer Vapor 6's... don't care what brand as long as they'll last me.

Best skates ever

Getting back into the game after a long hiatus (~20 years)... Skates have really changed; it seems mostly in the last 5-7 years. I've tried a few newer ones, but nothing feels like my trusty (and still quite functional) Daoust 501's. So, I've got two questions...

What are your favorite skates of all time?

What is the most recent skate to perform and feel like the Daoust 501 or Micron Mega 1090?

Some of you younger guys may never have felt anything like the skates I've mentioned. IMHO, the market is missing something great it once had.

I'll put my vote in for the Daoust 501's. I never had the Micron Mega 1090's, but I remember them and wish I could find a pair.

Replacing a blade in a blade/shaft combo

a very basic question - I can't seem to get a blade out of a shaft
I did use quite a bit of glue + force to put it in a while back, so now it just doesn't want to come out.

with that 2 questions:
1) are there any tricks for extracting blades?
2) do I need to worry about overheating the shaft? my heatgun is pretty weak, so maybe the issue is quite opposite and I'm not heating the shaft enough, but I just don't want to burn anything you know

any advice would be appreciated!

Skating on outdoor/natural ice

Hey guys, I have this rainwater pond near my house newly formed due to the land being developed for housing. This pond seems large enough and shallow enough for it to freeze quite well during the winter. My quesiton is will skating on this possible ice will have much negative effects on my skates?
If so, will a sharpening polish it? Or should I buy a used pair from Play It Again as a pair specifically for outdoors?

On a side note, a few years ago, a large pond of similar circumstances formed near my house. Almost everyday I would walk by it and test the ice, and scrape any snow off of it. Skating and playing on it (I didint have any equipment at the time) was and will be one of the best memories in my life. The peculiar activity of old-time pond hockey in the middle of urban Mississauga is quite an experience

How do I start taking control?

Here's the deal, I'm a sophomore and on the 3rd/2nd line of my varsity high school team. I've always been told that I have potential, but I am so inconsistent. Sometimes I'll make an amazing play, and sometimes I'll just totally screw everything up. Sometimes I will feel full of energy and ready to out-skate anyone, and other times I feel slower than usual. I am one of the fastest (running and skating) on the team and also the biggest (6'3" 200), but my stickhandling lacks. I think I have the skill to do a lot more than I do but my head is holding me back. I need to know how I can get my head in the game and stay consistent (physically and mentally) so I can take control of the play, I really want to go past high school hockey, but I don't know how far.

That may not make sense, but any input is appreciated.

Pain with bauer flexlite 4.0 pro

I have skated with a flexlite 12 for ice over the past few year without problem. So since I've had problems with a lot of my roller hockey skates causing me pain and blisters I decided to do a conversion with the new flexlite 4.0 pro. Trying the skates on, they felt perfect no problems. Had them baked and now i've been skating on them the past 4-5 months but I get severe ankle pain mostly on the outside part of the "high" ankle. The boot digs into my skin and by the second period that part is so raw and painful. I've tried thicker socks they dont help at all. Could the problem be that I keep the top eyelet undone? I skate terrible with the top one laced up I feel off balance. Anyone else have a similar problem with this skate or other skates?

A little help please

Ok, so first post here. I really need your help guys.

I haven't played as much hockey as I used to lately. I used to skate 6 days a week, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day, but I got burned out and sort of stopped. I recently got back into it and I just made the new AIHL Shenandoah Sabrecats team.

I'm skating on a pair of Tour Code 1's that I got a week after they were released. They have gotten ridiculously floppy on me, and I'm getting lace bite like never before so I've agreed it's time for some new skates.

I've done all of my research on my foot in the past few days, but I can't really tell if it's narrow, or wide or things of that nature. I have found that the Tour toebox rips apart the outside of my big toe, and I have dried blood in the bottom of my skates. I don't skate with socks either though. The boot also isn't deep enough for me. If I place a pencil across the third eyelet done from the top it hits my ankle long before the skates, and that's where the lace bite is coming in at.

I've been looking at the new line of Mission skates. I haven't skated on missions since 2004 and they were the most uncomfortable things ever, and I tried a pair of Wicked 1s before I committed to my Code 1s and they were pretty stiff, but still somewhat comfortable.

So I ask are the new missions skates any deeper than the Tour boot? And I've skated on nothing but Vapors and Supremes for the past 6 years in ice and never had a problem with them, so I'm thinking the toebox will be a bit bigger. But as Bauer now owns mission, my Supremes in a D width were always pretty tight. Think I could get away with a standard D width in the new mission line? Or am I most likely looking at an EE?

And if the Missions seem like something I should stray away from, then what would you all suggest?

There isn't anywhere within 4 hours for me to try on any of these high end skates, which makes me feel pretty nervous about just committing to one or the other, so please help me out here guys as I'll be ordering these skates in the next couple of days.
