Bauer X90r Rollers

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has these skates?

How do they find the overall stiffness ( compared to say other bauer/mission skates etc) and how well they hold up?

I just bought my X90R's Two weeks ago.. I came from a pair of RX:60's which I loved.

I baked these twice and i've skated 7x on them. I can say that they now feel JUST like my Rx60's, stiffness included. They don't have the magnesium chassis but the additional cutouts make them feel almost the same weight.

Durability is tough to tell so far. They have gotten scuffed a bit, but that'll happen with any skate. I went with these because there was no way I was dropping $900 on the APX2R's. No regrets here whatsoever.

Thanks for the reply. Im not familiar with previous gens of bauer. Where would you say the rx60s were in the range.

The reason i ask is, id be going from a mid range skate to one which is much stiffer. So im worried about additional stiffness.

I would say the XR90 boot would be closest in performance and stiffness level to the XR5. The RX60 had a different style liner and pro level stiffness package, the frame was also a mag frame rather than the aluminum that the XR5 and XR90 have.

My current skates are 2007 Mission Assassins (you guys remember the red tartan graphics lol).

I know it will be a jump in stiffness.. but was basically wondering how the stiffness would actually affect me? Ive been skating since i was 8 and am now 26. I'm a Nathan Gerbe height (without the skills lol) of 5'5" and weigh in about the 155lb mark..if that helps.

I also tried a pair of my friends apxr rollers the other day..those are mega stiff. :S hoping the X90rs are less then those!

I own the RX:60 and a 7.0 ice-to-inline conversion, both basically the same skate from what I remember (with differences on liner and chassis, granted).

Not as stiff as APX but thats a good thing, especially on roller I can't imagine using anything stiffer than RX:60. So if the X90r is the same as the RX:60 (as I would picture it without having seen the skates in person) or are just one model below (as vnderachiever stated), I think these will be a great place to start. As for your weight, I was insignificantly heavier than you when I switched from X3.0 to X:60, my starts and stops improved massively within a couple of times on the ice, and also cross-overs were tighter than before. Also increased protection from pucks and slashes.

apxr's take a lot of work to break in and get right. I know of a couple of players who actually shelved them because they can't get used to how stiff they are. If you have ANY foot issues in boots, these aren't really for you. I've got RX:60 and premier, and tried apxr's and XR5's. The XR5 isn't as stiff as any of the other boots but it is a solid, well made boot with a medium stiff panel. I've been told the X90 is a replacement for the XR5 and if the X90 is anything like it then it will be a big improvement over your assassins but not ultra stiff.

Imho the stiffness of the skate doesn't make you a better player. If you asked me this question a few years ago I'd have given a different answer. But I look round now at what a lot of our prem players are wearing and they are in some of the most beat up, bottom to mid range, 2 seasons + old boots. One of the best players in our country used soldiers for a long time and you don't get anymore basic than those boots.

Hey Vet88, i understand that stiffness doesnt make you a better player.. my original worry was that the increase of stiffness may negatively affect me. After trying on a pair of my friends APXrs.. i was a little worried. But fromt he sounds of it, the X90r is defo the way to go.. stiffer then my assassins but not so much like the APXrs.

Sorry for all of the questions, the problem i have is that, i would have to try on a pair of X60rs to get my size dialed in, and then get my LHS owner do a special order on the X90rs as the are not available in the UK. There seems to be a massive gap in the range for us. We get, X40r, X50r, X60r and then it jumps to the APXr2!

I dont think i will be going with missions again, as i feel i have a smaller instep which is more bauer like. Thanks for your post Vet

After a hiatus from hockey, I got Mission Soldier SE's (Similar to your Assassins) and the toe cap started to separate within about 6 weeks or so and had them replaced with Mission T7's that I have used since over the last 35 games or so, they have held up well but since I am playing in two leagues with different surfaces this summer I picked up a pair of Bauer XR5's for my sportcourt league and they are significantly stiffer than the T7's I was using prior, after about 8 games I am still breaking them in. I am a heavier player at 250lbs and although the T7's are still holding up well, even new they are no where near as stiff as the XR5's. For those wondering, I am using Labeda Shooters on smooth concrete while using a combo of Labeda Addictions and Rinkrat Hotshots for the sport court, no wheel chunking yet.

I find stiffness in modern skates to be extreme. Stiffness seems to assist in responsiveness to some degree, but IMO a little more lateral flex would be more beneficial. I bet in a few more years this will be in place. Peer reviewed studies are in the works of how damaging (from a physiological perspective) these new boots are. I'm talking about 'TOP OF THE LINE' retail models which are misleading, because custom is 'top of the line'. Watch skaters like Coffey and Leetch and see why some flex is required.

I am quite disappointed with my China APXR.

Stiff  yes

Light yes

Comfortable meh

Performance: FAST!!! Props to Bauer, but its all in the Chassis/Wheel combo me thinks.

Terrible liner for a Cast boot.

If I could go custom and get the older Bauer Pro Stock liner (double ankle padding, double felt tongue) these skates would be perfect. I don't want to have to change tongues on a top of the line skate. Worst tongue. No forward flex without pain. Why so much pain?? Double felt tongue - perfect.

I paid $300 for my APXR, would have punched walls had I spent 1k + (if I get double felt liners, change ankle padding)

how do you find the extra stiffness? has it hampered or helped you in anyway?

My biggest problem with older skates was that I am on the heavier side 250lbs so the boots would break down faster. TBH I haven't played enough yet to really cause either skate to break down, my Mission T7's are still holding up and I suspect my XR5's will last even longer. I would say that modern skates are generally stiffer than what I used when I first started playing about 14 year ago. Other than the break in process really being a pain in the foot, the additional support has been great in helping me stop without the boot flexing on me.
