Is it the stick/blade or is it me?

Recommended Posts

Lately, I have had problems with shooting the puck. I currently have a Bauer One80 stick, 87 flex, Kane curve. The problem I have with it is that I whiff shots a lot, like, a lot more than usual. I have the puck set up on my blade, and I shoot, but I think the puck manages to fit itself under the gap between the toe and the ice. This could mean that my lie is too high, and probably is. I used to have a Heatley curve, Easton S15, 67 flex, and an intermediate size, lie 5. I had less of a problem whiffing with the Easton than I do with the Bauer. However, I felt that I was unable to keep my head up enough with the lower lie of the Heatley curve. Is the lie the problem, or am I messing up the shot sequence?

Luckily, I am going to buy a Nexus 600 stick. Essentially, with the info given, should I go for a Stamkos/Malkin curve (might need a less open curve, I do shoot way too high) or should I stick with a Kane curve?

I went to an 87 because I thought I would put on the extra muscle necessary to use the flex. I hated how whippy the Easton felt, and, to me, I enjoy the stiffness of the 87. Although I probably will try a 77 next time...

Shortening sounds like a good idea, but I prefer my stick about 1/8" inch above my nose with shoes on. I prefer the stick uncut, in other words. That's why I'm asking a lie question more than anything.

That's what I said too before I cut my stick shorter...it changed everything lol.

Could be a lie issue or a length issue.

That's my problem. An inch off the stick DOES change everything.

I have a back up Warrior AK, and it is what you would say as standard size or a bit less for my size (app. 5'11" and the stick was just barely under my nose with shoes on). When I played, I missed receiving passes quite a bit, but DID have no problems when shooting. I don't know; maybe I'm over-prioritizing passing, but I'm not the one to shoot all that much, more to set up.

Same here. I used to have my sticks up to my upper lip, but felt that I wasnt getting the control I wanted (esp on the much smaller rink). I cut it another 2 inches, and now on skates the stick is below my collerbone. I've noticed a huge change in the way I am able to control the puck.

If you are against cutting the stick, why not tape a knob 1 inch lower than your current setup. Play with it and see how that works for you, or lower the taped knob another 1/2 inch until you feel comfortable. Then decide if you want to cut the stick or not.

Excellent idea! I'll try that, maybe a half inch down. But if that doesn't work, should I try a 5 lie or 5.5 lie curve like the Stamkos or Iginla respectively?

Would your team mates have sticks that you can sample? Maybe ask if you could borrow a few to puck handle etc and then see how that goes?

It sounds like a length/lie issue. You can go with a lower lie or a shorter stick, or both. It sounds like you probably should look into both as that sounds like you have enough of a problem to warrant a lower lie and a shorter stick. You're also likely to see a velocity decrease with such a big jump in stiffness as well.

My suggestion, cut an inch and see how that plays. If you still have an issue, go to a lower lie at that shorter length. As for the flex, make sure it loads on your wrist shot and you will be fine.

At least I'm getting a new stick soon, so I can make flex adjustments if I actually need to cut the stick down a bit. I will probably go for the knob cut down idea; I already have a Tacki-mac on my problem stick, so getting it off and cutting it would be more problematic for me than to do the knob lowering trick.

The good thing is, I have two wooden sticks with lies 5 and 5.5 and about the same length, so I can test with those. I might go back to a 5.5 lie considering that's how I started using when I started playing.

Lie issue... I used to always cut my sticks to a certain length no matter the lie or pattern until recently. Now I get a new batch throw my skates on and get the blade flat and get my top hand where I want it if I was stick handling or shooting and cut it. Haven't had any issues with whiffing on shots or passes and I've seen a dramatic jump in accuracy and velocity on all shots
